Chrysler, Jeep® Most Improved Brands in J.D. Power 2016 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS)

Dodge Challenger, Chrysler Town & Country Lead Their Segments

  • Chrysler and Jeep® most improved brands in initial quality
  • Dodge Challenger leads Midsize Sporty Car segment in initial quality for third consecutive year, fourth time in six years
  • Chrysler Town & Country is highest ranking Minivan in quality study, Dodge Grand Caravan ranks second in segment
June 22, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Chrysler and Jeep® are the most improved brands in J.D. Power’s 2016 U.S. Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) with both brands improving their initial quality scores by 20 percent from last year’s study.

For a third consecutive year and for the fourth time in six years (2011, 2014-16), Dodge Challenger ranks at the top of the Midsize Sporty Car segment.

FCA US minivans also performed well in the study. Chrysler Town & Country ranks highest among Minivans in initial quality with Dodge Grand Caravan taking second place in the segment.

“Our commitment to quality is starting to show results as Chrysler and Jeep make strong improvements in initial quality, but there is still much work to do,” said Scott Garberding, Head of Quality, FCA – Global. “My colleagues and I are focused on continuing the positive momentum created so far as we look to earn and maintain the trust and loyalty of customers across all our brands.”

IQS is based on responses from more than 80,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2016 model-year vehicles surveyed after 90 days of ownership. The study asks customers to identify issues with their vehicles’ design, as well as defects.

“Dodge Challenger continues to impress new owners year after year with the muscle car now leading the Midsize Sporty Car segment in initial quality for the third straight year and the fourth time in six years,” Garberding added. “Chrysler and Dodge minivans continue their leadership position in the segment by taking the top two spots in initial quality.”

The Dodge brand’s Challenger muscle-car arsenal for 2016 is reloaded as the most complete model lineup with 10 trim levels, ranging from the 707-horsepower SRT Hellcat to the 305-horsepower, 30-mpg, 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6-powered SXT model. All 2016 Dodge Challenger models are designed and engineered for world-class precision and outstanding performance.

Challenger previously achieved the highest IQS ranking among Midsize Sporty Cars in 2011, 2014 and 2015, as well as being named a segment leader in the J.D. Power U.S. Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) StudySM in 2014 and 2015.

The IQS study, now in its 30th year, is based on a 233-question survey conducted between February and May 2016.

Google Self-Driving Car Project and FCA Announce First-of-its-kind Collaboration

  • Google expands self-driving test program with the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan
  • FCA engineers to work alongside Google engineers to integrate self-driving technology into vehicle
  • Self-driving cars have the potential to make our roads safer and make transportation more accessible for millions of people
May 3, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Google Self-Driving Car Project and FCA announced today, in a first-of-its-kind collaboration, that they will integrate Google’s self-driving technology into all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to expand Google’s existing self-driving test program. This marks the first time that Google has worked directly with an automaker to integrate its self-driving system, including its sensors and software, into a passenger vehicle.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be used later this year for Google’s self-driving testing, more than doubling Google’s current fleet of self-driving test vehicles. Engineering responsibilities will be shared based on each company’s respective expertise. FCA will initially design and engineer around 100 vehicles uniquely built for Google’s self-driving technology. Google will integrate the suite of sensors and computers that the vehicles will rely on to navigate roads autonomously.

Both companies will co-locate part of their engineering teams at a facility in southeastern Michigan to accelerate the design, testing and manufacturing of the self-driving Chrysler Pacifica.

“FCA has a nimble and experienced engineering team and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan is well-suited for Google’s self-driving technology,” said John Krafcik, Chief Executive Officer, Google Self-Driving Car Project. “The opportunity to work closely with FCA engineers will accelerate our efforts to develop a fully self-driving car that will make our roads safer and bring everyday destinations within reach for those who cannot drive.”

Self-driving cars have the potential to prevent some of the 33,000 deaths that occur each year on U.S. roads, 94 percent of which are caused by human error. This collaboration will help FCA and Google better understand what it will take to bring self-driving cars into the world.

“Working with Google provides an opportunity for FCA to partner with one of the world’s leading technology companies to accelerate the pace of innovation in the automotive industry,” said Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, FCA. “The experience both companies gain will be fundamental to delivering automotive technology solutions that ultimately have far-reaching consumer benefits.”

Google’s self-driving cars are currently being tested in four U.S. cities. The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be tested by Google’s self-driving car team on its private test track in California prior to operating on public roads.

About the Google Self-Driving Car Project
The Google Self-Driving Car Project is working to develop fully self-driving vehicles that have the potential to make our roads safer and increase mobility for the millions of people who cannot drive. The ultimate goal is to help people get from A to B at the push of a button.  In the project’s seven year history, the vehicles in the test fleet have self-driven over 1.5 million miles on public roads, and they’re currently being tested in Mountain View, CA, Austin, TX, Kirkland, WA, and Phoenix, AZ. The Google Self-Driving Car Project is part of X, a moonshot factory that’s part of Google’s parent company Alphabet.

Jeepspeed Racers Prove, It’s Not Over Until It’s Over At Silver State 300

Alamo, NV
If there is one thing that characterizes the level of competition in the General Tire Jeepspeed Desert Race Series presented by KMC Wheels and Premier Chrysler-Jeep, it’s the famous Yogi Berra saying, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over. Like the Best In The Desert Silver State 300 course that climbs and drops over mountains and through valleys, Jeepspeed racers swapped the lead back and forth throughout the race. It’s amazing that a racing series that draws such a diverse field of vehicles can produce such parity and competition. 13 Jeepspeed Challenge Class 1700 entries entered the Silver State 300; one Wrangler, ten Cherokees, one Grand Cherokee, and the first short wheelbase Comanche Pickup truck.
Bob Mamer, Jeepspeed, Jeep Comanche, Silver State 300

At first glance, the #1707 entry of Perry Coan and Skyler Gambrell looked like a sure winner. Both drivers have a ton of racing success. They were in good equipment and they started on the pole. Despite losing a brake caliper early on, at mile 290 of 304 they looked like a sure bet to win. At race mile 290.5 they were out with a sheared sector shaft on the steering box. To add insult to injury, the shaft broke nearly flush with the housing; denying the crafty Gambrell from using vise grips or whittling a new pitman arm from a fallen cactus; like you would expect from him.

Race winner Rick Randall was up and down the order all day. He started in 11th place and charged through the dust to take the lead after pit 3. He got stuck in the silt allowing Gambrell to pass. After extracting themselves, they chased and caught Gambrell. As they pulled out to pass, they slammed a boulder, killing the left front tire. They changed the tire without losing a position and resumed their chase of Gambrell who was leading. Then they clipped a rock on the right rear causing another flat. When they discovered the lug socket went missing somewhere so they used a trusty crescent wrench on the lug nuts. The stop allowed Rob Seubert to get by dropping them to third. They passed Rob back as he sat on the side of the course a few miles later; they were back in second. “We decided to take it easy and settle for 2nd,” Said Randall, “As we made our way through the silt and Joshua trees towards the finish we were very surprised to see the 1707 parked off of the course.  Skyler gave us the thumbs up so we headed for the finish. We heard over the radio that Tim Martin was coming up behind us and we had to push it a little to beat him to the finish.  It felt good to win the race after making so many mistakes as a driver.” The win makes it two in a row for Randall racing.

“We had a good race but a little incident nearly cost us everything,” Said Tim Martin, “We were going back and forth with Seubert when he passed us. We came into a left to right corner and we missed the right. We went off course and were stuck on a ledge. 1771, (Korbet Krough and Jesse Stowell) gave us a tug off the ledge so we could continue.” Tim spent the rest of the race battling thick dust, trees and deep ruts in the silt beds. At one point he got crossed up in the deep ruts caused by the unlimited trucks and the Cherokee shot off course into the desert. As they kept moving they passed several competitors stopped on the course.  “There are so many fast guys in this class anyone can win,” says Martin, “My pit crew is my wife, kids and anyone who will lend a hand. We were happy to finish third but when we passed Skyler we knew we had second. This is my best finish to date. I’m looking forward to Vegas to Reno.” An interesting side note is that the Randall Racing crew built the engine in Tim Martin’s truck.

In third place was points leader Garrett Allred. He was dicing with Dylan Cochran through the trees when he clipped a boulder and flipped his Grand Cherokee onto the side. In an amazing act of sportsmanship, Cochran stopped and helped Allred back onto 4 wheels. “We would not be on the podium without their help,” said Allred, “We were overheating all day; the temperature did not want to go below 240. Then we had the roll. We got stuck in a silt bed but Best in the Desert was right there to pull us out. We really wanted a podium so I was on it; working the truck super hard. We stopped in the pits to tighten a ball joint; that’s when Martin passed us. Then Seubert went down, Gambrell went down, we ended up on the podium. Despite the day we had with all the problems, I can’t complain. I can’t even explain what a good feeling it is to be on the podium. I should buy Cochran a muffin basket or something for pulling us back over.” The podium finish keeps the rookie Allred in the points lead.

We were having a great battle through the trees when we came around a corner and they went on their side,” said Dylan Cochran about Allred’s roll, “We are friends with Garrett’s co-driver Ken Stahlman so we stopped. He was in a bad spot; we’ve been there before so I know how stressful it is. We passed those guys back and forth all day. At mile 240 we lost the rear track bar. I had to limp it in for 5th place.”

Dylan Cochran, Jeepspeed, Bink Designs, Off Road Racing, Jeep

In 4th place was Mike Bragg. He drove a solid race. While others dropped out or got stuck, he kept moving up through the field. “We had the 4×4 shift lever come loose, my co-driver had to hang onto it until we made it to pit 3,” said Bragg, “We stuck it in 4×4 and pulled the lever off. We got stuck 6 or 7 times here last year so we converted the front end to four wheel drive and added G2 gears in our Currie 9” and Dana 44 differential. We got stuck 6 or 7 times here last year so we converted the front end to four wheel drive. We were down on power so I had to keep downshifting. It turned out that we lost a header collector bolt that affected the O2 sensor. We just kept picking guys off all day. We came up on that uphill silt bed; I side-hilled it and passed two guys right there. We made easy passes like that all day.”

Mike Bragg, General Tire, Jeepspeed, Silver State 300, Currie Enterprises, Bink Designs

In Jeepspeed Cup Class 3700, Bob Mamer was sole survivor in his turbo charged Comanche. “We had a plan to take it easy until pit 5; especially after we heard about our friend Justin Lofton’s big crash while we were in staging,” said Mamer, “We had vapor lock issues that caused the motor to die. It got a little scary in the mountains. We stopped and tried a couple things but it continued. It started to die on the wooden bridge and we didn’t think we would make it across. We played with the fuel pumps and all of a sudden it was running good. Then it was running great. From then on it was a lot of fun. We heard others in our class had problems so we played it smart and it all worked out. We had no flats all day!”

2015 Dodge Challenger, Jeep® Grand Cherokee Lead their Segments in U.S. Vehicle Satisfaction Survey

JP015_058GC__mid

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee is highest ranking Mid-Size SUV for fifth consecutive year
  • Dodge Challenger leads Sporty Car segment, second time in three years
July 8, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Jeep® Grand Cherokee – the most awarded SUV ever – ranks highest among Mid-Size SUVs for the fifth consecutive year in AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Awards (VSAs). For the second time in three years, surveyed owners placed the Dodge Challenger at the top of the Sporty Car segment for its best-in-class vehicle satisfaction.

VSAs are based on the responses of more than 66,000 owners of new 2015 model year vehicles. The survey objectively measures owner satisfaction through 50 separate attributes ranging from interior comfort and convenience to fuel economy and performance.

“In many cases, an extremely satisfying vehicle is not the car or truck that has the best absolute build quality or the best safety rating,” said George Peterson, president of AutoPacific. “VSAs look at the big picture, which includes owners’ experiences with their vehicle’s quality and safety, but also goes deeper into the heart of the ownership experience.”

Dodge Challenger was totally updated for the 2015 model year with a new standard eight-speed transmission, all-new interior, exterior updates and new safety technologies.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee completely redefines the premium SUV, delivering customers an array of innovative advanced technologies for driver safety and passenger enjoyment. The vehicle is widely known for its outstanding on-road driving dynamics and quietness, thanks in part to its front and rear independent suspension.

The new Dodge Challenger SRT 392 adds an exclusive wheel design, adaptive damping suspension and SRT Drive Modes to the same 6.4-liter naturally-aspirated HEMI powerplant while the Challenger SRT Hellcat with its 707 horsepower supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V-8 engine is most powerful and fastest muscle car ever.

July 1, 2015 , Vancouver, B.C. -FCA Canada (formerly Chrysler Canada) is celebrating Canada Day with a life-size replica of the iconic Jeep® Wrangler built from over 4,500 cans of non-perishable food that will be donated to local charity. The automaker’s famed Jeep brand and the FCA Foundation – the charitable arm of FCA US LLC –partnered with the international non-profit organization Canstruction® Inc. to build the vehicle, can-by-can, at Vancouver’s renowned, waterfront Canada Place. Assembled by local-area students aged 12-18, this special Wrangler will provide more than 3,120 meals to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society when donated after our nation’s 148th birthday.

Jeep_Canstruction1llid49lqf7tqnf6mfsi0hh92vd“This unique Canada Day Canstruction project not only serves as a tool to raise awareness for issues of hunger and poverty in our country, it also demonstrates to the students involved how critical – and fun – subjects like science, technology, engineering and math can be,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, FCA Canada. “This project also provides a wonderful opportunity for us to give back to a community that has helped drive FCA’s success in Canada. In 2014 and year-to-date, FCA is the top-selling automaker in B.C. This Jeep Wrangler build in Vancouver represents the third time FCA Canada and the FCA Foundation have partnered with Canstruction Inc. on a project. In 2013, they paired up to build a life-size Dodge Grand Caravan in Toronto‘s Yonge-Dundas Square and also built a full-size Ram pickup in Calgary in 2014 during the city’s famed Stampede. Canstruction utilizes structures made out of full cans of food to capture public attention and raise awareness for hunger and poverty, along with STEM principals, plus community service.

The Canstruction Jeep Wrangler took approximately 12 hours to build and will be on display July 1, 2015 from 10am – 6pm as part of Canada Place’s massive Canada Day celebration. Last year, over 250,000 people attended the daytime festivities, 300,000 watched the parade, and over 400,000 viewed the two-barge, simultaneous fireworks show.

The public is encouraged to climb aboard this specially-designed, “canstructed” Jeep Wrangler for a#JeepCANselfie to share on social media platforms.

Jeep® Brand Turns City Street into Forest With Wild Mountain River

Jeep® Brand Turns City Street into Forest With Wild Mountain River

  • The Jeep® brand suspends traffic on downtown Vancouver city street and takes unsuspecting drivers on a surprise detour in uniquely own-able approach to highlight versatility and real-world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee
  • New :30 “River in the City” commercial can be seen on www.jeep.com/cherokeedetour, which includes a :60 version of the spot in addition to special behind-the-scenes footage that includes the making of the campaign, photos, interviews and other exclusive content
January 5, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Jeep® brand suspended traffic on an unassuming city street in Vancouver, amazing city-dwellers by taking unsuspecting drivers by surprise by converting an entire block into a forest with a wild mountain river, brought to life with snowbanks, boulders, rocks, sand/gravel, moss, live fir trees and two wolves. The unique approach was accomplished to introduce drivers to the versatility and real-world capability of the Jeep Cherokee. The :30 “River in the City” commercial, which debuted on television this past weekend (January 4), unfolds as unsuspecting drivers were recruited to test the Jeep Cherokee by following directions from its navigation system throughout downtown Vancouver. Following the detour, the directions soon led them to the “river in the city” and the drivers were actually a part of the real-life demonstration of the vast, wide range of capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee. The commercial is further brought to life with captivating images of the drivers in the Jeep Cherokee confronting boulders and gravel amidst a raging river, all set against downtown parking meters and people moving down escalators in city buildings as the work day unfolds.”We wanted to bring to life the real world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee in a unique approach,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA – Global. “So how do you do that? By taking what is essentially an experiential event where unsuspecting drivers are being filmed navigating a busy metropolitan street that has been turned into a fully functional mountain river and let them experience the capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee for themselves. Our ‘River in the City’ takes an untraditional approach to create a powerful statement that the Jeep Cherokee can handle anything a city throws at it.”

The :30 “River in the City” ad can be viewed at www.jeep.com/cherokeedetour, which features a :60 version of the spot and includes three additional product commercials (below). The site also features an exclusive behind-the-scenes video and photo gallery that explores the making of the “River in the City” commercial, as well as interviews with the drivers taken on the unexpected detour.

The “River in the City” shoot took place from June 14 – June 18, 2014. The set was built and produced three days prior to the filming of the commercial. It took place on 400 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Materials included:

  • 1,000,000 pounds of boulders, rocks and sand (2,500 sand bags), used throughout the set to break up water flow and give surface disturbance
  • Water (250,000 gallons) was pumped onto the street with water pumps hidden in the alley and placed in key spots. (The water was recycled using a closed water system that pumped water from the end of the street back to the top. The water was eventually discharged down the street, into Vancouver Harbor.)
  • 400,000 pounds of snow – the snowbank was made of snow blanket and fish-ice
  • Logs, sticks, moss, and 80 fir/hemlock trees lined/covered the street. (The trees were boxed and returned to the nursery and boulders, gravel and other materials were also repurposed.)
  • Two wolves were on set. (The domesticated, mixed-breed wolves were made available from the Animal Insight for Film and TV. A representative from the American Humane Association was on set to attest that the wolves were treated humanely and procedures were followed. Observers were able to take pictures with the animals.)

In addition to “River in the City,” three additional spots focusing on product features of the Jeep Cherokee are currently airing on television and available online:

  • “Front and Rear Park Assist” – in this :30 spot on the Vancouver “river” street, Jeep proclaims “We’ve got your front and your back” — focusing on front and rear park assist technology of the Jeep Cherokee.
  • “Forward Collision Warning” – :30 spot highlighting the Jeep Cherokee’s important passive safety system feature to assist by warning the driver prior to a potential collision.
  • “Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist” – synchronistic orchestration shows simultaneous parallel and perpendicular park assist technology of the Jeep Cherokee.

Jeep Wrangler Named SEMA’s “Hottest 4×4 SUV” for Fifth Year In A Row

Jeep® Wrangler, Mopar’s Most Accessorized Vehicle, Recognized as SEMA’s ‘Hottest 4×4-SUV’ for Fifth Consecutive Year

  • SEMA selects Jeep® Wrangler as most customized vehicle in the 4×4 Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) category at this year’s trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center
  • Jeep Wrangler has won SEMA’s ‘Hottest 4×4-SUV’ for a fifth consecutive year
  • Mopar has added even more new Jeep Performance Parts and accessories to a portfolio that already has more than 300 available for the Jeep Wrangler
November 4, 2014 , Las Vegas – For a fifth consecutive year, the Jeep® Wrangler, Mopar’s most accessorized vehicle, has been recognized as the “Hottest 4×4-SUV” at the 2014 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The SEMA Award recognizes vehicle models that specialty equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorization in order to showcase the year’s coolest products. The winning selection was determined with a survey of vehicles displayed by participating SEMA exhibitors on the convention floor. That simple metric helps identify an emerging trend as SEMA Show exhibitors choose to channel their investments into the cars they consider the top enthusiast prospects for the coming year, helping to drive the direction of an industry that generates $33 billion per year in the United States alone.

SEMA President and CEO, Chris Kersting presented the award to Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO—Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care, at the SEMA Media breakfast.

“Data indicate that the availability of a wide range of accessories has a strong influence on new-car sales,” said Kersting. “By winning yet another SEMA Award for Hottest 4×4-SUV, the Jeep Wrangler reinforces its position as the off road vehicle best suited to reflect consumer’s individuality.”

“The Jeep Wrangler is our most accessorized vehicle and to have it awarded for a fifth consecutive year at SEMA demonstrates its popularity due to the quality of the vehicle along with that of the performance parts and accessories Mopar has developed for it,” Gorlier said. “It’s wonderful to see it keep winning accolades and reinforce the efforts we’ve made to keep adding quality Jeep Performance Parts to more than the 300 we already have available for this vehicle in order to provide even more options for personalization.”

“It’s a tremendous honor that Jeep Wrangler has once again been named the “Hottest 4×4-SUV” at the SEMA Show,” said Mike Manley, President and CEO – Jeep Brand. “Jeep Wrangler owners are the ultimate enthusiasts, and have always loved modifying their vehicles.  Offering a unique, classic design and unmatched capability, Wrangler is the perfect platform for them to do so.”

The Jeep Performance Parts portfolio, created and offered by Mopar and Jeep, offers high-end, hard-core quality Jeep parts including axles, lift kits, bumpers, winches, skid plates and suspension components. These performance parts offer factory-engineered solutions to increase off-road performance.

The following are the among the newest Mopar parts and accessories available for the Jeep Wrangler:

Jeep Performance Parts 2-inch Lift Kit for Jeep Wrangler
The Jeep Performance Parts 2-inch lift kit gives greater ground clearance and approach and departure angles to get over the tough obstacles on the trail.  This new factory-engineered kit contains shocks and springs that are specifically tuned to the vehicle weight for better on-road handling.  The new kit includes a high strength driveshaft for 2012 to 2015 model years. This driveshaft provides better articulation than other solutions in the aftermarket. The new kit uses durable production sway bar links, and component corrosion protection is equal to production vehicle standards. The kit also comes with a fun plywood packaging crate that fits in a two-door Jeep Wrangler, and can easily be reused for a coffee table or handy storage crate.

Jeep Performance Parts Heavy Duty 44 Series Rubicon Front Axle Housing
The Heavy Duty Dana 44 Rubicon front axle housing is a direct bolt in replacement for the production housing and features heavier wall axle tubes for greater strength than what a stock housing might offer. This is particularly beneficial to Jeep Wrangler owners that love to work their rides a little harder when they go off-road or have a heavy bumper with a winch mounted.

Jeep Performance Parts Front and Rear Axle Mounting Bracket Packages
Jeep Wrangler owners who prefer to fabricate and install their own axles now can buy the axle mounting brackets in one inexpensive kit. Each kit includes upper and lower control arm mounts, spring mounts and track bar mounts.

Jeep Custom Hood Decal
Owners can personalize the hoods of their Jeep Wrangler with pre-configured map decals of popular trails or by using an online customizable tool create their own topographical or street map graphics. Jeep custom hood decals are designed to exactly fit specific hood dimensions of 2007–2015 Jeep Wranglers. Durably produced with premium 3M films, the decals measure up to Mopar’s engineering quality standards for superior graphic performance and include a three-year warranty to guard against fading or manufacturer defect.

2015 Jeep Wrangler
The iconic Jeep Wrangler – the most capable and recognized vehicle in the world – moves into 2015 with new features, such as a standard eight-speaker audio system and an improved sound bar, and an optional Premium Alpine Audio Package that includes nine Alpine speakers, a new subwoofer and a 552-watt amplifier.

The 2015 Jeep Wrangler delivers unmatched off-road capability with legendary four-wheel drive and is produced with more than seven decades of 4×4 engineering experience. Wrangler continues to offer a body-on-frame design, front and rear five-link suspension system, live axles, electronic lockers, and is one of the few mid-size SUVs that offers a six-speed manual transmission – in addition to its five-speed automatic transmission.

Celebrating the Adventures of an American Jeep Legend: Mark A. Smith

This post was posted on the Chrysler Blog “Objects in the Mirror” and can be found here.

The Smith family’s public thank you to the Jeep community and Jeep Jamboree USA (JJUSA) family for their support of Mark A. Smith’s efforts to promote recreational off-roading took place on Sunday, August 31st at Henningsen-Lotus Park, Lotus, California. The Jeep Girls drove their 2015 Firecracker Jeep Wrangler to say good-bye to an old friend and meet new ones as well.

This was an opportunity for long time friends to share their stories of great times with Mark. This gathering also served to reveal and thank Jeep for creating a one of a kind Mark A. Smith edition Jeep Wrangler. The vehicle was donated to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s department for their support and patrol of the Rubicon Trail, namesake of the more than a decade-old Jeep Rubicon.

Speakers included Retired Judge  Eddie Keller, CA State Senator and proud Jeep owner Ted Gaines, friend Perry King, Off-Road Hall of Fame member and icon Rick Pewe and Tyler Ruby of the Jeep Brand. JJUSA support staff, journalists, and friends of Mark A. Smith made up a crowd of approximately 250, to pay tribute to his life accomplishments.

guests

It was a sunny, warm day near the Rubicon Trail.  Attendees were invited to laugh together and share the signature trail “sack lunch” of chicken fingers, brownies, mystery chips, and M&M’s, which were Mark’s favorite.  Friends of Mark sported his signature white cowboy hat with silvery ponytails attached! Some folks even took to jumping to celebrate the miles driven by red Mark’s CJ-7!

Pearse Umlauf, Vice President, JJUSA

Memories included Vice President of JJUSA, Pearse Umlauf, describing that he and Jeep Jamboree helicopter pilot Mel Cain recently hit a rare species of bird en route to Rubicon Springs. The feathers of this ill-fated creature donned the podium, which was woven from the wood of trees found on the Rubicon Trail. As Pearse began to talk about the significance of hitting this rare species, there was a beautiful dragonfly that playfully lingered at the ceremony. The animal lover and fun-lover in Mark would have treasured the decoration.  It was noted that Mark was an explorer, having headed the 1987 Camel Trophy in Madagascar as well as the 1978-79 Expedicion de las Americas, a 120-day trek from South America to North. In 1982, Smith founded Jeep Jamboree USA. In Mark’s book, Driven by a Dream, he said that after he’s gone, “I’ll probably be exploring …with my dog in my Jeep.”

Mark’s daughter had mentioned that the family recently gathered together on the Rubicon where they saw a beautiful rainbow in the clouds.  They had also heard that there was an influx of wildflowers that had never been seen on the trail before.  They bloomed for a mere forty-eight hours.  We all gathered together celebrating a burning fire of adventure!

Marksmith'sExpeditionVehicle2

Rick Pewe, an exceptional off-road expert who has explored the world off-road near and far, left the crowd with some poignant words regarding the accomplishments of Mark A. Jeep® Brand: Freedom, Adventure, Authenticity and Passion

  • All-new 2015 Jeep® Renegade: most capable small SUV ever combines Jeep heritage with cool new styling to appeal to youthful and adventurous customers
  • Five 2015 Jeep SUVs achieve at least 30 miles per gallon (mpg)
September 2, 2014 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – Now in its eighth decade of legendary heritage, the Jeep® brand continues to deliver an open invitation to live life to the fullest by offering a full line of vehicles that provide owners with a sense of safety and security to handle any adventure with confidence. Since 1941, when the first Jeep vehicle was born, the brand has continued to engineer and produce unique, versatile and capable vehicles.

Since its inception nearly three-quarters of a century ago, the Jeep brand has been closely linked with the ideas of freedom, authenticity, adventure and passion:

  • Freedom: Jeep vehicles have long been known as the “original fun and freedom machines,” those that “go anywhere and do anything.”  And from its beginning, freedom was at the forefront of the Jeep brand, given the role Jeep vehicles played in World War II
  • Adventure: Doers, dreamers, discovery — “going anywhere, doing anything”
  • Authenticity: Being true to its heritage with an unwavering commitment to leading capability and strength engineered into all Jeep vehicles
  • Passion: Enthusiasm held by Jeep team members and vehicle owners for the unique lifestyle and vehicles offered by the Jeep brand

In 2013, the Jeep brand set a new, all-time global sales record of 731,565, bettering the brand’s previous annual highs of 701,626 units sold in 2012, and 675,494 units sold in 1999. 2013 marked the fourth consecutive year of Jeep sales increases globally and in the U.S.

For 2015, the brand expands its lineup to the small SUV segment with the introduction of the all-new Jeep Renegade, which will deliver a unique combination of best-in-class off-road capability, open-air freedom and convenience, a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission that contributes to outstanding on-road driving dynamics, world-class refinement, two fuel-efficient MultiAir engines with more than 30 miles per gallon (mpg), and a host of innovative safety and advanced technology features. Renegade marks the fifth SUV in the Jeep lineup to achieve at least 30 miles per gallon (mpg).

With the greatest range of SUVs under one brand, the Jeep vehicle portfolio consists of:

Cherokee: The mid-size SUV that offers legendary Jeep Trail Rated 4×4 capability combined with no-compromise on-road driving dynamics and fuel economy improved up to 45 percent versus its predecessor. The Cherokee delivers numerous innovative features, including a segment-first nine-speed automatic transmission, three new 4×4 systems, rear-axle disconnect, and a host of advanced safety, security and technology features

Compass: A compact SUV with sophisticated, premium design, unsurpassed 4×4 fuel economy, freedom, utility, and Jeep 4×4 cachet and capability – all at a terrific value

Grand Cherokee: The most-awarded SUV ever, balancing legendary Jeep capability with world-class craftsmanship, premium on-road driving dynamics and an array of advanced safety, security and technology features

Grand Cherokee SRT: The best-performing Jeep vehicle ever, achieving 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds, quarter mile in mid-13 second range and top speed of 160 mph, Grand Cherokee SRT is a powerful, refined, luxurious and technically advanced premium SUV

Patriot: A compact SUV delivering the fun, adventure and value only Jeep can offer, with unsurpassed 4×4 fuel economy and segment-leading capability. Jeep Patriot is the best-priced SUV in America

Renegade: The newest addition to the Jeep vehicle lineup, Renegade enters the growing small SUV segment. The most capable small SUV ever, Renegade boasts legendary Jeep capability, superior driving dynamics, cool and youthful styling, more than 30 mpg fuel economy, and numerous segment-exclusive technologies once found only on premium SUVs

Wrangler: The icon of the Jeep brand, it remains true to its heritage as the original fun-and-freedom machine. Wrangler features a recently updated new interior and available premium body-color hardtop, along with Chrysler Group’s 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine that delivers fuel efficiency, power and on-road refinement

Wrangler Unlimited: The only four-door 4×4 convertible SUV on the market with room for five adult passengers, Wrangler Unlimited also features an available premium hardtop and the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine

Whether identified by their ownership of multiple Jeep vehicles, or their regular attendance at branded events, or by their abundance of Jeep gear – branded products from clothing to baby strollers – Jeep owners all have one common trait:  a Jeep vehicle delivering benchmark all-weather capability that allows them to go anywhere and do anything.  It’s not unusual to see Jeep vehicles sporting a bumper sticker that reads, “It’s a Jeep thing…you wouldn’t understand.”

To meet consumer demand around the world, all Jeep models are sold outside North America – and all are available in right-hand-drive versions and with gasoline and diesel powertrain options.  Chrysler Group LLC vehicles are available in more than 150 countries around the world.
