January 5, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Jeep® brand suspended traffic on an unassuming city street in Vancouver, amazing city-dwellers by taking unsuspecting drivers by surprise by converting an entire block into a forest with a wild mountain river, brought to life with snowbanks, boulders, rocks, sand/gravel, moss, live fir trees and two wolves. The unique approach was accomplished to introduce drivers to the versatility and real-world capability of the Jeep Cherokee.The :30 “River in the City” commercial, which debuted on television this past weekend (January 4), unfolds as unsuspecting drivers were recruited to test the Jeep Cherokee by following directions from its navigation system throughout downtown Vancouver. Following the detour, the directions soon led them to the “river in the city” and the drivers were actually a part of the real-life demonstration of the vast, wide range of capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee. The commercial is further brought to life with captivating images of the drivers in the Jeep Cherokee confronting boulders and gravel amidst a raging river, all set against downtown parking meters and people moving down escalators in city buildings as the work day unfolds.”We wanted to bring to life the real world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee in a unique approach,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA – Global. “So how do you do that? By taking what is essentially an experiential event where unsuspecting drivers are being filmed navigating a busy metropolitan street that has been turned into a fully functional mountain river and let them experience the capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee for themselves. Our ‘River in the City’ takes an untraditional approach to create a powerful statement that the Jeep Cherokee can handle anything a city throws at it.”

The :30 “River in the City” ad can be viewed at www.jeep.com/cherokeedetour, which features a :60 version of the spot and includes three additional product commercials (below). The site also features an exclusive behind-the-scenes video and photo gallery that explores the making of the “River in the City” commercial, as well as interviews with the drivers taken on the unexpected detour.

The “River in the City” shoot took place from June 14 – June 18, 2014. The set was built and produced three days prior to the filming of the commercial. It took place on 400 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Materials included:

  • 1,000,000 pounds of boulders, rocks and sand (2,500 sand bags), used throughout the set to break up water flow and give surface disturbance
  • Water (250,000 gallons) was pumped onto the street with water pumps hidden in the alley and placed in key spots. (The water was recycled using a closed water system that pumped water from the end of the street back to the top. The water was eventually discharged down the street, into Vancouver Harbor.)
  • 400,000 pounds of snow – the snowbank was made of snow blanket and fish-ice
  • Logs, sticks, moss, and 80 fir/hemlock trees lined/covered the street. (The trees were boxed and returned to the nursery and boulders, gravel and other materials were also repurposed.)
  • Two wolves were on set. (The domesticated, mixed-breed wolves were made available from the Animal Insight for Film and TV. A representative from the American Humane Association was on set to attest that the wolves were treated humanely and procedures were followed. Observers were able to take pictures with the animals.)

In addition to “River in the City,” three additional spots focusing on product features of the Jeep Cherokee are currently airing on television and available online:

  • “Front and Rear Park Assist” – in this :30 spot on the Vancouver “river” street, Jeep proclaims “We’ve got your front and your back” — focusing on front and rear park assist technology of the Jeep Cherokee.
  • “Forward Collision Warning” – :30 spot highlighting the Jeep Cherokee’s important passive safety system feature to assist by warning the driver prior to a potential collision.
  • “Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist” – synchronistic orchestration shows simultaneous parallel and perpendicular park assist technology of the Jeep Cherokee.

October 4, 2014 , Morrison, Colo. – Thousands of Jeep® and O.A.R. fans will converge among the legendary Colorado rocks Saturday night, Oct. 4, to hear the band perform at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre for the annual Jeep on the Rocks concert experience.

O.A.R. kicks off their Colorado experience by off-roading in Jeep Wrangler SUVs through Idaho Springs, Colo., seeing the glorious Rocky Mountains up close in a way only a Jeep vehicle allows.  Following their experience on the trail, the band will take to the famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre stage for a special concert sponsored by the Jeep brand as a thank you to the fans of O.A.R. and the iconic off-road vehicles.

With each studio album, the band has endeavored to achieve that sense of intimacy.  The Rockville LP, O.A.R.’s eighth studio album debuted at #13 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the Independent Albums chart.  The Rockville LP also hit the top spot on the iTunes Rock Albums chart and #3 on iTunes Overall Albums chart.   The hit single, “Peace,” reached #1 on the iTunes Rock Singles chart coupled with television performances on The Today Show, Live with Kelly & Michael, Conan, VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live and a national tour.

The Smith family’s public thank you to the Jeep community and Jeep Jamboree USA (JJUSA) family for their support of Mark A. Smith’s efforts to promote recreational off-roading took place on Sunday, August 31st at Henningsen-Lotus Park, Lotus, California. The Jeep Girls drove their 2015 Firecracker Jeep Wrangler to say good-bye to an old friend and meet new ones as well.

This was an opportunity for long time friends to share their stories of great times with Mark. This gathering also served to reveal and thank Jeep for creating a one of a kind Mark A. Smith edition Jeep Wrangler. The vehicle was donated to the El Dorado County Sheriff’s department for their support and patrol of the Rubicon Trail, namesake of the more than a decade-old Jeep Rubicon.

Speakers included Retired Judge  Eddie Keller, CA State Senator and proud Jeep owner Ted Gaines, friend Perry King, Off-Road Hall of Fame member and icon Rick Pewe and Tyler Ruby of the Jeep Brand. JJUSA support staff, journalists, and friends of Mark A. Smith made up a crowd of approximately 250, to pay tribute to his life accomplishments.

It was a sunny, warm day near the Rubicon Trail.  Attendees were invited to laugh together and share the signature trail “sack lunch” of chicken fingers, brownies, mystery chips, and M&M’s, which were Mark’s favorite.  Friends of Mark sported his signature white cowboy hat with silvery ponytails attached! Some folks even took to jumping to celebrate the miles driven by red Mark’s CJ-7!

Memories included Vice President of JJUSA, Pearse Umlauf, describing that he and Jeep Jamboree helicopter pilot Mel Cain recently hit a rare species of bird en route to Rubicon Springs. The feathers of this ill-fated creature donned the podium, which was woven from the wood of trees found on the Rubicon Trail. As Pearse began to talk about the significance of hitting this rare species, there was a beautiful dragonfly that playfully lingered at the ceremony. The animal lover and fun-lover in Mark would have treasured the decoration.  It was noted that Mark was an explorer, having headed the 1987 Camel Trophy in Madagascar as well as the 1978-79 Expedicion de las Americas, a 120-day trek from South America to North. In 1982, Smith founded Jeep Jamboree USA. In Mark’s book, Driven by a Dream, he said that after he’s gone, “I’ll probably be exploring …with my dog in my Jeep.”

Mark’s daughter had mentioned that the family recently gathered together on the Rubicon where they saw a beautiful rainbow in the clouds.  They had also heard that there was an influx of wildflowers that had never been seen on the trail before.  They bloomed for a mere forty-eight hours.  We all gathered together celebrating a burning fire of adventure!

Rick Pewe, an exceptional off-road expert who has explored the world off-road near and far, left the crowd with some poignant words regarding the accomplishments of Mark A. Smith. “…We’d all like to be on the Rubicon Trail right now, think about that!” The adventuresome and visionary spirit of Mark A. Smith has made the Jeep Rubicon, as well as the use of the Rubicon Trail, possible.
