Google Self-Driving Car Project and FCA Announce First-of-its-kind Collaboration

May 3, 2016 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Google Self-Driving Car Project and FCA announced today, in a first-of-its-kind collaboration, that they will integrate Google’s self-driving technology into all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans to expand Google’s existing self-driving test program. This marks the first time that Google has worked directly with an automaker to integrate its self-driving system, including its sensors and software, into a passenger vehicle.

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be used later this year for Google’s self-driving testing, more than doubling Google’s current fleet of self-driving test vehicles. Engineering responsibilities will be shared based on each company’s respective expertise. FCA will initially design and engineer around 100 vehicles uniquely built for Google’s self-driving technology. Google will integrate the suite of sensors and computers that the vehicles will rely on to navigate roads autonomously.

Both companies will co-locate part of their engineering teams at a facility in southeastern Michigan to accelerate the design, testing and manufacturing of the self-driving Chrysler Pacifica.

Self-driving cars have the potential to prevent some of the 33,000 deaths that occur each year on U.S. roads, 94 percent of which are caused by human error. This collaboration will help FCA and Google better understand what it will take to bring self-driving cars into the world.

Google’s self-driving cars are currently being tested in four U.S. cities. The self-driving Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans will be tested by Google’s self-driving car team on its private test track in California prior to operating on public roads.

Jeep vehicle sales were led globally and in the U.S. in 2015 by Cherokee (295,081 global; 220,260 U.S.), Grand Cherokee (277,236 global, 195,958 U.S.), Wrangler (255,283 global; 202,702 U.S.), Renegade (158,351 global; 60,946 U.S.), Patriot (143,003 global; 118,464 U.S.) and Compass (108,626 global; 66,698 U.S.).

2015 marked the sixth consecutive year of increased Jeep sales, both globally and in the U.S. The previous five years saw increases of 39 percent global/41 percent U.S. (2014), 4 percent global/3 percent U.S. (2013), 19 percent global/13 percent U.S. (2012), 41 percent global/44 percent U.S. (2011), and 24 percent global/26 percent U.S. (2010).

November 12, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Los Angeles Auto Show will mark the debut of two new-for-2016, special-edition Jeep® models:  the 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Night and the 2016 Jeep Wrangler Backcountry.The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night blends ultimate performance with a premium black appearance that includes a unique black roof and lightweight performance wheels. To celebrate the winter season, the Jeep Wrangler Backcountry delivers snow lovers a winter-themed Jeep that will get them wherever they want to go with a host of Wrangler’s most capable off-road features.

“Jeep enthusiasts anticipate and truly appreciate special-edition models that deliver a customized Jeep SUV right from the factory,” said Mike Manley, Head of Jeep Brand – FCA Global. “The Grand Cherokee SRT Night and Wrangler Backcountry both offer a distinctive appearance, while delivering an array of prominent performance and capability features.”

The 2016 Jeep Wrangler Backcountry arrives in showrooms in late November. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night will be available in the first quarter of 2016.

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night features a stealth-like appearance with the roof, rear spoiler, front grille bezels, B and C pillars and side window surrounds all adorned in Gloss Black. The front applique is Satin Black, as is badging on the hood and rear liftgate.

New lightweight, split five-spoke “5Ten” 20-inch wheels are also finished in Satin Black and are designed to showcase the Grand Cherokee SRT8’s standard Brembo brakes. Interior appointments include Black Laguna leather with Silver accent stitching and Light Black Chrome bezels.

Available colors for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night include Velvet Red, Billet Silver and Granite Crystal.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night features a standard 6.4-liter V-8 engine with Fuel Saver Technology that delivers 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque, an adaptive damping suspension and a Selec-Track Traction Control system.

Available features include a dual-pane sunroof, a 19-speaker 825-watt Harman Kardon stereo system, trailer tow package, three-season tires, a full-size spare tire and a dual-screen rear entertainment system.

Performance numbers for the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT Night include 0-60 mph acceleration in 4.8 seconds, 0-100-0 mph in 16.3 seconds, quarter mile in the mid 13-second range and a top speed of 160 mph.

The Jeep Wrangler Backcountry boasts a winter capability theme and is based on the Wrangler Sahara model. It features a Backcountry decal on the front fender and rear quarter panel, a unique off-road front and rear powder coated bumper, 17-inch Rubicon wheels painted in Mid-gloss Black and a black fuel fill door. Wrangler Rubicon rock rails are standard on the Wrangler Backcountry, but Sahara side steps are also available at no additional charge. A black hard top is standard, but an optional body color hard top is also available.

Wrangler Backcountry is available in five colors: Hydro Blue, Black, Bright White, Granite Crystal and Xtreme Purple. Backcountry is the only model in Wrangler’s lineup available in Xtreme Purple.

Inside, Wrangler Backcountry features Piano Black vent rings, door handles and grab handles. A vinyl-wrapped console lid and door armrests with Diesel Gray accent stitching, black McKinley leather seat bolsters with black sport mesh inserts, a nine-speaker premium Alpine sound system and all-weather slush mats are featured. The Bluetooth hands-free Connectivity Group is also standard in the Wrangler Backcountry.

January 5, 2015 , Auburn Hills, Mich. – The Jeep® brand suspended traffic on an unassuming city street in Vancouver, amazing city-dwellers by taking unsuspecting drivers by surprise by converting an entire block into a forest with a wild mountain river, brought to life with snowbanks, boulders, rocks, sand/gravel, moss, live fir trees and two wolves. The unique approach was accomplished to introduce drivers to the versatility and real-world capability of the Jeep Cherokee.The :30 “River in the City” commercial, which debuted on television this past weekend (January 4), unfolds as unsuspecting drivers were recruited to test the Jeep Cherokee by following directions from its navigation system throughout downtown Vancouver. Following the detour, the directions soon led them to the “river in the city” and the drivers were actually a part of the real-life demonstration of the vast, wide range of capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee. The commercial is further brought to life with captivating images of the drivers in the Jeep Cherokee confronting boulders and gravel amidst a raging river, all set against downtown parking meters and people moving down escalators in city buildings as the work day unfolds.”We wanted to bring to life the real world capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee in a unique approach,” said Olivier Francois, Chief Marketing Officer, FCA – Global. “So how do you do that? By taking what is essentially an experiential event where unsuspecting drivers are being filmed navigating a busy metropolitan street that has been turned into a fully functional mountain river and let them experience the capabilities of the Jeep Cherokee for themselves. Our ‘River in the City’ takes an untraditional approach to create a powerful statement that the Jeep Cherokee can handle anything a city throws at it.”

The site also features an exclusive behind-the-scenes video and photo gallery that explores the making of the “River in the City” commercial, as well as interviews with the drivers taken on the unexpected detour.

The “River in the City” shoot took place from June 14 – June 18, 2014. The set was built and produced three days prior to the filming of the commercial. It took place on 400 Granville Street in downtown Vancouver, Canada. Materials included:

  • 1,000,000 pounds of boulders, rocks and sand (2,500 sand bags), used throughout the set to break up water flow and give surface disturbance
  • Water (250,000 gallons) was pumped onto the street with water pumps hidden in the alley and placed in key spots. (The water was recycled using a closed water system that pumped water from the end of the street back to the top. The water was eventually discharged down the street, into Vancouver Harbor.)
  • 400,000 pounds of snow – the snowbank was made of snow blanket and fish-ice
  • Logs, sticks, moss, and 80 fir/hemlock trees lined/covered the street. (The trees were boxed and returned to the nursery and boulders, gravel and other materials were also repurposed.)
  • Two wolves were on set. (The domesticated, mixed-breed wolves were made available from the Animal Insight for Film and TV. A representative from the American Humane Association was on set to attest that the wolves were treated humanely and procedures were followed. Observers were able to take pictures with the animals.)

  • “Front and Rear Park Assist” – in this :30 spot on the Vancouver “river” street, Jeep proclaims “We’ve got your front and your back” — focusing on front and rear park assist technology of the Jeep Cherokee.
  • “Forward Collision Warning” – :30 spot highlighting the Jeep Cherokee’s important passive safety system feature to assist by warning the driver prior to a potential collision.

The SEMA Award recognizes vehicle models that specialty equipment manufacturers believe are the best platforms for accessorization in order to showcase the year’s coolest products.The winning selection was determined with a survey of vehicles displayed by participating SEMA exhibitors on the convention floor. That simple metric helps identify an emerging trend as SEMA Show exhibitors choose to channel their investments into the cars they consider the top enthusiast prospects for the coming year, helping to drive the direction of an industry that generates $33 billion per year in the United States alone.

SEMA President and CEO, Chris Kersting presented the award to Pietro Gorlier, President and CEO—Mopar Service, Parts and Customer Care, at the SEMA Media breakfast.
